The adored retro-rock band Shannon and the Clams have spent the past six years carving a cowlicked niche into the punk world with three albums of thrashing NorCal doo-wop. Their 50s aesthetic caked with lo-fi grit ushered in a wave of "weirdo oldies" that later became the reigning sound of Oakland garage-rock. Noisey is proud to premiere Gone by the Dawn, the fourth album from Shannon and the Clams, out officially on September 11 from Hardly Art Records. That said, it's Shannon's party. Congratulations on your fourth album Gone by the Dawn. It's so impressive how underneath this stylish, patent-leather aesthetic is a raw sadness and arresting sense of doom. How do you manage to make something so campy feel so real? Shannon Shaw: I think a lot of it is a reflection of my personality and my true natural feelings about things. I think I’m just like that.
Throughout Gone By The Dawn, echoing drumbeats and twanging guitars meet futuristic squalls. Tying it all together is the distinctive voice of Shannon Shaw. She might not take the lead on every track, but with an all-natural charisma, she never falls short of commanding attentions. Switching between soaring and sultry as the mood demands it, her performance is entirely hypnotising. Take one listen to "Corvette": husky words ring out with their own sense of allure, rippling riffs and rhythms subtly powering underneath Shannon's enchanting vocal melodies. But by bringing history to the present day, Shannon and The Clams have forged out a niche that's completely their own. It might not be a styling anyone was demanding for, but once it's in your focus, you won't find a band that do it better.
Shannon & the Clams really put it all together on their 2013 album Dreams in the Rat House. Tighter and tougher than before with hookier songs and both bassist Shannon Shaw and guitarist Cody Blanchard nailing their vocals, the album was a near-brilliant '50s/'60s throwback. Just to show that it wasn't a fluke, their 2015 album Gone by the Dawn is even better.
Fourth album from the Californian 1960s inspired garage punk trio. Gone by the Dawn may never make the radio (Though Corvette ? Maybe.
