For me, this lends a sense of urgency to finding out where some of that usage came from. The fear, I suppose, is that something valuable will be irretrievably lost if phraseology is allowed to die off with its users. Conversely, some expressions become utterly senseless once their currency is depleted. One of my very few British references says the expression came from "an old Irish legend about two cats who fought each other so long and so murderously that finally there was nothing left but their tails. Page 199. It seems there are three main theories on the origin of the phrase.
Kilkenny Castle (Irish: Caisleán Chill Chainnigh) is a castle in Kilkenny, Ireland built in 1195 to control a fording-point of the River Nore and the junction of several routeways. It was a symbol of Norman occupation and in its original thirteenth-century condition it would have formed an important element of the defences of the town with four large circular corner towers and a massive ditch, part of which can still be seen today on the Parade.
There once were two cats from Kilkenny Each thought there was one cat too many. So they fought and they fit And they scratched and they bit And instead of two cats, there ain't any! (You may, incidentally, like to note the use here of fit, the dialectal past tense of fight. Where the expression comes from in one sense is easy enough: everyone’s agreed that it refers to the ancient town of Kilkenny, on the River Nore in south-east Ireland

Wild Cats Of Kilkenny - by Shane MacGowan and Jem Finer from the album "Rum Sodomy & The Lash". Wild Cats Of Kilkenny - as perfomed by The Pogues. This whole song (at least the rythym) seems to be just a variation of these two progressions. About the artist behind Wild Cats Of Kilkenny Chords: The Pogues are a band of mixed Irish and English background, playing traditional Irish music with influences from punk rock, formed in 1982 and fronted by Shane MacGowan. They reached international prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s, until MacGowan left the band in 1991 due to drinking problems. They continued with first Joe Strummer and then Spider Stacy on vocals before breaking up in 1996. The band began performing together again in 2001, though they have yet to record new music.
Next to birds, cats possess the widest range of vocalizations of any domestic pet. Though best known for their meows, purrs, hisses, and growls, the list of sounds they regularly make is more comprehensive than this. Depending on the situation, your cat is capable of making many distinct utterances, with multiple nuanced variations of each, according to importance. All, though, are indicative of your cat’s emotional state of mind. Perhaps the most commonly heard cat sound, the meow of an adult cat is almost exclusively used to communicate with humans, and not other cats. First uttered by kittens when in need of their mothers, this juvenile vocalization fades away as wild cats mature. But, as cats in domesticity tend to think of themselves as our eternal offspring, they maintain this endearing vocalization throughout their adult lives.
