Album · 1984 · 11 Songs. On the good-rocking How Will the Wolf Survive?, East . s Los Lobos solidify Chicano rock, a style steeped in soulful Mexican lore and rollicking Americana. If there’s doubt as to whether Los Tigres del Norte’s norteño ways or Elvis’ rockabilly roots played a role in this honky-tonk outing, Don’t Worry Baby quickly confirms both with its bluesy Tex-Mex swagger; so do the polka jams of Corrido and Serenata Norteña, which come equipped with lively tambora rhythms and exciting accordion riffage.
Los Lobos is a Mexican-American rock band from East Los Angeles, California, USA, heavily influenced by rock and roll, Tex-Mex, country music, folk, blues, and traditional Spanish, Mexican music such as boleros and norteño. Vocalist/guitarist David Hidalgo and drummer Louie Pérez met at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles, and bonded over their mutual affinity for obscure musical acts such as Fairport Convention, Randy Newman and Ry Cooder. Pérez recalls, "We’re looking at each other, 'You like this stuff? I thought I was the only weird on.
And for Los Lobos that meant rock n roll. And with new bands busting down musical barriers of the past all around them, Los Lobos decided to follow suit and bust down some stereotypical barriers of their own. Never a group to wear big sombrero hats or play the mariachi circuit, Los Lobos had a wider view of what it meant to make traditional music, Mexican or otherwise. And closing the album on a perfect note we are finally treated to the folklorico instrumental short Little King Of Everything and roots driven title track of Will The Wolf Survive, with it’s chiming jingle jangle guitars and story of a Mexican immigrant trying to make good on the run meeting with the story of young musicians doing the same. And it’s a unifying message that ties this great set of music up with passion and grace.
