With Captain Beefheart, Zappa recorded some songs under the name of the Soots. The music on the other hand is like Zappa trying to write Beefheart for Beefheart. It's a cool concept and Beefheart delivers wildly passionate vocals. The tracks with CB doing his poetry with Zappa's band are alright. They aren't as memorable as his spoken word on his own albums. Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy" is decent enough, features no contribution from CB so he could have easily put it somewhere else, though it is a nice cooldown from the onslaught of the first track.
