In addition to being a fabulous punk band - that alone is cause for enduring respect - Effigies were even more exciting for the way they effortlessly smashed the reigning misconceptions in the early '80s of just what punk was all about or stood for. According to the pundits, and even some fanzines, punk in America, and its bastard son hardcore, especially the best-known Southern California kind, was made by bored, pre-college, suburban youth, by teens complaining about their parents and bucking authority figures from teachers to Ronald Reagan.

The album was originally pressed by Roadkill Records in 1989. On the original release, Roadkill Records head David Best is listed as the Executive Producer. The reissue features additional liner notes (by Steve Albini, Steve Bjorklund, Jack Rabid, and others) and an extra track at the end of the album which features an answering machine message from a club owner complaining about the band's attitude and the volume of their show. The reissue also features the original Ed Dantes liner notes from 1989, although the final paragraph, which featured some remarks about the current activities of the original Effigies members (excluding John Kezdy, who was still leading a version of the band at that time), was removed, along with.
