Stravinsky considered him to be on a level with Debussy and Ravel when Schmitt was at the height of his creative powers in the early years of the century, it's not hard to hear influences of La tragédie de Salomé (1909) in The Rite of Spring. Like many French composers of his generation, Schmitt was fascinated with the exoticism of the East, and while working on his massive setting of Psaume XLVII, he visited the Ottoman Empire and gained firsthand experience with its folk musics. Thierry Fischer leads the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales in a scorching performance. Hyperion's sound is clean and well balanced, but a little bright.
The Orchestre national de France (ONF; literal translation, National Orchestra of France) is a French symphony orchestra based in Paris, founded in 1934. Placed under the administration of the French national radio (named Radio France since 1975), the ONF performs mainly in the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées from where all its concerts are broadcast. Some concerts are also held in the Salle Olivier Messiaen in the Maison de Radio France (formerly known as Maison de la Radio).
Schmitt: Psaume XLVII, La tragedie de Salome, Suite. Schmitt: La Tragédie De Salomé & Psaume 47. Sharon Sweet. This Schmitt recording is well worth having. I believe that this Tragedie de Salome is the finest that has ever been released. Although this work is abridged and reorchestrated from a longer ballet composed in 1907 (the complete original score can be found on a good Marco Polo disc), this is the version used by Diaghilev and the one that is more frequently performed. Schmitt sounds more like Chausson here than Debussy, who was a major influence to Schmitt. Tortelier creates the proper mysterious atmosphere, perhaps coming closer to the spirit of Poe than almost any other work (Caplet’s Conte fantastique is the closest). Alas, I cannot embrace this version of Psalm 47 as much as I would like.
